Overview:

Practices are held at St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM) on Tuesdays in June and July. Competition in July. Requires athlete to sail for 2 hrs. at a time, to be seizure-free, and be able to swim. Personal Flotation Device (PFDs) are required. Various levels of training available.

Equipment:

SMCM provides the PFD and boats shirts along with the other necessary equipment needed to perform the sailing events. Athletes may purchase or bring their own PFD but needs to check with the head coach prior to purchasing equipment. Athletes should wear quick dry clothes or a bathing suit, bring sunscreen, closed toed water shoes, hat and sunglasses. If you have long hair, bring something to keep it out of your face while sailing. Athletes should bring water for drinking, rain or wind jacket, a towel and a COMPLETE CHANGE OF CLOTHES; including underwear, shoes, an extra hat, and sunglasses.

Uniform Requirements:

SOMD-SMC will provide athletes with uniforms but they are only worn for competition. Athletes should also be wearing quick dry clothes (examples: bathing suit), uniform shirt and hat while sailing.NO JEANS!

Timing:

Tuesdays from 5:00PM to 7:00PM, starting the first Tuesday after Summer Games and each week through the Tuesday prior to the Sailing Regatta (Late July).

Activities:

Practice will begin with warm up excersises.

Eligibility for State Competition:

There are a required number of qualifiers needed to attend the state competition. Some of those can be the required qualifiers announced throughout the season. Each athlete must also attend at least 8 practice sessions to be qualified to compete at the State competition. The athletes and families will receive notification of all qualifiers.

State Competition:

The Sailing Regatta is the what we consider the state competition for the Sailing Program. The Sailing Regatta is held at St. Mary’s College of Maryland at St. Mary’s City, MD usually on the last weekend of July.

Participation in Other SOMD-SMC Sports:

Sailing athletes are not allowed to participate in other SOMD-SMC sports during the summer (Summer Games) season due to regulations posted for SOMD-SMC.

Athlete Participation Contract:

Not Required.

Other Considerations:

Sailing Requirements for ALL participants: *Be able and willing to follow verbal directions plus have basic swimming ability *Wear a life jacket (PFDs) at all times. Volunteers:

We always need help for a successful season. We are a 100% volunteer coaching and management staff. Parents who wish to help, please register as volunteers. (See information at the bottom of this page).

Only registered SOMD-SMC athletes and registered volunteers are allowed in the training area. Parents and spectators who are not registered as volunteers MUST watch from outside the training area.

Anyone with an intellectual disability age 7 and older are invited to become a Special Olympics athlete. ATHETES MUST BE AGE 8 PRIOR TO BEING ALLOWED TO COMPLETE. Athletes age 7 are allowed to train with the other athletes but just cannot compete.
