Overview:

Practices are held various days during the week at Vandermere Farm from April through June. The regional competition is in early June. Practice for the regional competition is from April to June. Athletes need to supply their own riding clothing and boots.

Equipment:

SOMD-SMC supplies the horses through a contract with Vandemere Farms. Vandemere Farms provides all necessary equipment related to the horse. The athletes must provide their riding outfit if they plan to compete.

Uniform Requirements:

Athletes will provide heir own riding clothing and boots for qualifiers and state competition. Athletes should also be wearing appropriate clothing for horse riding. NO SHORTS OR SCANDALS!

Timing:

Individual training slots are provided for each athlete to provide the safest and best experience for each rider (athlete) from 1st week of April through July

Activities:

Practices begin with warm up excersises.

Eligibility for State Competition:

This is not a sanctioned SOMD sport, therefore there are no formal qualifiers. With that said, athletes must attend at least 8 practices to be eligible to compete in the state assisted competition.

State Competition:

What used to be a state competition for the Equestrian Program is held at The Show Place Arena, 14900 Pennsylvania Ave, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772, USA in July.

Participation in Other SOMD-SMC Sports:

Equestrian athletes can participate in other SOMD-SMC sports as long as the athlete can maintain full practice participation in each participating sport.

Athlete Participation Contract:

Not Required.

Housing Requirements for State Competition:

N/A.

None.

Volunteers:

We always need help for a successful season. We are a 100% volunteer coaching and management staff. Parents who wish to help, please register as volunteers. (See information at the bottom of this page).

Only registered SOMD-SMC athletes and registered volunteers are allowed in the training area. Parents and spectators who are not registered as volunteers MUST watch from outside the training area.

Anyone with an intellectual disability age 7 and older are invited to become a Special Olympics athlete. ATHETES MUST BE AGE 8 PRIOR TO BEING ALLOWED TO COMPLETE. Athletes age 7 are allowed to train with the other athletes but just cannot compete.

All athletes/volunteers must sign up for sport training prior to attending practice. Please sign up online as soon as possible so that we can make plans for coaching needs.
