About

Special Olympics Maryland – St. Mary’s County (SOMD-SMC) provides a year-round training and competitive sports program for residents with intellectual disabilities for the St Mary’s County Community as well as other surrounding counties depending on certain circumstances. We offer as many sports as we can obtain the volunteers (Coaches and Sport Volunteers) and funding to help manage each program. Currently we offer 14 different sports that spans form January through October.

All children and adults that are of the age of eight years old or older can compete in Special Olympics programs. Children can start training at the age of seven years old. There is no upper age limit.

We are trying to start a program offered from SOMD called the Young Athletes Program (YAP), which is designed to offer some structured training in the basics of sports and it has been specifically been developed for pre-school and early elementary aged children with intellectual disabilities.

SOMD-SMC is sanctioned by SOMD. SOMD is a tax-exempt organization under the U.S. Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3), EIN 23-7089144.
